The League

The LEAGUE is a group of people who are committed to a cause. The "cause" is the gospel and the impact of the BMW mission family around the world. I belong to this organization because of the services and support it offers to all of us serving our Lord. I am also part of something bigger than my ministry as I link arms with missionaries around the world. To keep BMW financially strong we are seeking a large number of people who will give a small amount each month. Those "smaller amounts" add up quickly. A snowflake by itself is harmless but when combined with others it can create an avalanche. A $10 monthly gift combined with others adds up to a lot. Would you consider being part of that avalanche? A short video on the BMW website will explain this further http://www.biblicalministries.org/

Psalm 37:23-"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and He delights in his way."

“IMPACT THROUGH INTERCESSION.”

January 15, 2011

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year. Are most of you having as much trouble as we are remembering to write 2011? As this new year unfolds, our prayer is that we will take advantage of every opportunity God gives us to share the Gospel with the unsaved and encourage believers to love God and serve Him more faithfully. God was faithful to us in 2010 and we give Him thanks.

December was a "stay at home" month for us and we were blessed by the time we spent with family and friends. We loved getting Christmas cards, letters and pictures from many of you. It is so good to hear how things have gone for you this year and be able to share in your joys and in your sorrows. Vince's mother, Chris, came for a three week visit in December and Susan and Cara came the week before Christmas. Aimee & Bill and Eric, Sarah and Gemma came Christmas day. It started snowing Christmas day and we had a White Christmas! It was perfect and beautiful. Our favorite activity was ”Holding Gemma” and we did a lot of laughing, eating, playing games, catching up on each other’s lives and just being thankful for our family and that we love one another and are close to one another. We had all planned to attend church together but were disappointed when that got cancelled because of the weather.

Jerry spent December 29 to January 2 in Myrtle Beach playing golf with six friends from Pennsylvania. Amy's sister, Stephanie and Kurt and four of their children came and spent a few days over New Years with Amy. Jerry flew to Albany, NY on January 6th and represented BMW at the Word of Life Bible Institute's annual Missions Conference.
He made some good contacts with students and saw many friends from our years of being on staff at Word of Life. In the meantime we had a major snow and ice storm in Atlanta and it took Jerry a couple of days to get a flight back home and then the hard part was getting him from the airport to our house. He took the MARTA train out to our area and Vince and Rob King managed to drive there and get him home. Thank you Lord! The storm started Sunday night and Atlanta was mostly shut down all week. The temperatures are so cold that the ice isn't melting very fast. We read somewhere that Atlanta has almost five million people and ten snow plows, ha! Anyway we are thankful to have a warm house, plenty of food and family next door!

We are in Fayetteville, NC, this weekend, where Jerry is teaching a workshop at The Church at Fayetteville. Our friends, Rodney and Chris Phillips, are ministering at this church and are tentmaking missionaries with BMW. Pray that we will be an encouragement to Rodney and Chris and to the church. We stopped in Martinez, GA on the way to Fayetteville and had lunch with another of our BMW tentmaking missionary couples, Bob and Marcia Corbin. It is a joy to be able to spend time with these special missionaries.

Thank you to those who have joined our Prayer Force. We now have about 350 members who are a vital part of our ministry. We would love to have even more people praying for us so let us know if you would like to encourage us in this way.

Our Love in Christ,

Jerry and Amy Smith

“IMPACT THROUGH INTERCESSION.”

July, 11 2010

Dear Friends,

June 10 and 11 we were with friends in Columbia, SC and while we were there we took two chaplains from Ft. Jackson out for dinner. It is a great blessing to visit with our IFCA chaplains and their families and hear how God is using them in ministry with our US military. We drove from Columbia to Fayetteville, NC where Jerry taught a leadership workshop at The Church at Fayetteville. This church is pastored by one of our Southwest Church Planting couples, Rodney and Chris Phillips, and we had a great weekend with them. We were also able to spend some time with another of our missionary couples, Spencer and Linda Hammond, who work with the military at Ft. Bragg. Chris, Linda and Amy had fun having lunch at a great Tea Room in Fayetteville while the guys were at the workshop. The fellowship that weekend was good and encouraging.

June 26th – July 2 was the annual IFCA Church Extension and IFCA Convention which was in Springfield, IL this year. We drove to the convention and took a long way around to get there. Our first stop was in Little Rock, AR where we spent a few days with good friends, Doug and Jane Anne Smith. We drove to St. Louis and made an afternoon stop at South County Bible Church which is pastored by Gary Armstrong. Gary and Chela and their three boys have been a special part of our family for many years and it is a blessing to see God using them in ministry at SCBC. The church was having Vacation Bible School and the youth group from Branson Bible Church was there to teach the VBS. What made this so special for us was that our grandson, Eric and Sarah, were two of the youth leaders from Branson, so we got to spend a few hours with them and watch their youth teach a soccer camp in the afternoon and lead the VBS that evening. From St. Louis we drove to Jerseyville, IL and stayed with another of our church planting missionaries, Dave and Phyllis Georgeff. One of our responsibilities and joys is to try to encourage and help our missionary church planters and other pastors in any way we can.

The IFCA Convention was such an encouragement. We enjoyed wonderful fellowship with many “old” and “new” friends, and the general session speakers and seminar speakers were great. The women’s conference speaker was Martha Peace and Amy really enjoyed her teaching and her testimony given at the Ladies’ Luncheon. Amy also was able to visit the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield while we were there.

We are thrilled to report that we have reached our goal of 300 prayer warriors on our Prayer Force. We have 302 people who have signed up to pray for us every day and we feel so blessed. Thank you all so much. We know it makes a difference in our lives and ministry.

Jerry continues to do well physically and has his diabetes under control. He was able to play quite a lot of golf in June and the exercise helps him too. We are looking forward to a full candidate orientation beginning tomorrow, and we are glad to be able to keep two couples in our home.

Serving with Joy,

Jerry and Amy Smith

“IMPACT THROUGH INTERCESSION.”

June 10, 2010

Dear Friends,

May turned out to be a "stay at home mostly" month. It was a blessing to be able to attend services at our home church for four Sundays in a row. We did take a few short trips--one to North Carolina for a "Cousins Day" for Amy. Her cousin, Eleanor, was visiting from Washington state, so we got together for a fun day with her and some other cousins. We
celebrated Jerry's birthday with brunch at a favorite restaurant with Jill & Jana's families and Jana and Amy got to attend a Mother/Daughter event at our church. Amy had her yearly physical checkup with good reports and she got busy and did some spring cleaning at our home. Jerry has been very disciplined with his diet recently and his diabetes is doing much better. We drove to Birmingham, AL to attend the Gulf States IFCA Regional and enjoyed good fellowship with lots of friends. We also had a cookout in our subdivision which was well attended and a good chance to continue to build relationships with our neighbors.

We are very thankful to report that we now have 298 members of our Prayer Force. What a wonderful encouragement! Only two more before we reach our goal of 300, but of course we will be happy to have more than 300! Every morning and throughout our day we are so encouraged as we think of the many people who are praying for us. We continue to send several prayer reminders during the month and Jerry sends out daily prayer reminders on Twitter and Facebook.

June will be a little different from May. Already we have celebrated our 51st Wedding Anniversary with a trip to Tennessee. We spent time with Amy's brother, John, and Pat and we were at Homecoming at Lambert Community Church last Sunday. Jerry's father pastored here for 44 years and this is where Jerry grew up so it is always a blessing to visit and reminisce with the many friends who attend. Please use the schedule which follows to keep us in your prayers as you see where we are and what we are doing.

Thank you to all who support us financially and prayerfully. You are a blessing!

Serving with Joy,

Jerry and Amy

“IMPACT THROUGH INTERCESSION.”

May 9, 2010

Dear Friends,

April was a busy travel month for us and we were only home for four days. We began in Lancaster, PA and Richmond, VA which we reported on in our last update. On Monday, April 12 we drove to Belton, MO where we stayed a few days with our friends, Matt and Penny Mills. Jerry spent some time on campus at Calvary Bible College and spoke in Chapel there on Friday, April 16. We left after lunch that day and drove to Jerseyville, IL where Jerry taught a Change Workshop at Grace Community Baptist Church on Friday night and Saturday. Jerry also spoke at the church on Sunday Morning. We enjoyed fellowship all weekend with Pastor Dave and Phyllis Georgeff.

From Jerseyville we drove to Morton, IL where we attended a conference for Pastors of Small Town and Country Churches sponsored by RHMA (Rural Home Mission Association). We met many pastors and visited with many friends, some from our days at Citadel Bible College. Our next stop was Elkridge, MD where Jerry taught a Change Workshop at Faith Bible Church on Saturday. We spent Saturday night with Dave and Kathy Kelley in Lusby, MD. We have been friends with Dave and Kathy since the late 1980's when Dave pastored churches in Maine. On Sunday, April 25, Jerry spoke in the morning at Calvary Bible Church, where they are presently serving. On Sunday evening he spoke at Camp Springs Community Church in Clinton, MD.

We enjoyed spending Monday and Tuesday with our friends, Sam and Jackie Martz in Thurmont, MD. We drove by Camp David and saw some beautiful scenery in the area. April 28-30 we visited Jerry’s sister, Laurette, and Karl in Virginia Beach, VA. It was so special to be with Laurette's family. While we were in Viriginia Beach Jerry had lunch with John Seaton who is joining BMW to have a ministry to military. On Friday he spent time with IFCA Chaplain Dale Parker at Norfolk Naval Base and had the privilege to tour the George W. Bush Aircraft Carrier.

Our three week trip ended in Golden Valley, NC where we stayed with Amy’s sister and family. On Sunday, May 2, we had a memorial service at the little church and cemetery where Amy’s parents are buried. Many of Amy's relatives attend this yearly service and we have a wonderful time catching up on family news along with great group singing and lots of special music. Jerry always brings a message from the Word and we end by singing "God Be With You Till We Meet Again". It is a wonderful time to remember and be thankful for our wonderful Christian heritage.

Our Prayer Force now numbers 285 and we are so thankful to have this many people who are praying for us daily. We are so encouraged and strengthened every morning to know that this many people are praying for our day. Jerry is sending out a daily prayer request on Twitter and Facebook as a reminder to pray. If you would like to join our prayer team or get these daily prayer requests, just let us know. We are trusting God to give us 300, or even more, in our Prayer Force soon.

We are looking forward to being home during May and we both have some projects we would like to get done at home and in the office. Pray that we will be able to accomplish these tasks and also get some rest before we start traveling again in June.

Serving with Joy,

Jerry and Amy

April Stepping Stones

Smith Stepping Stones
Psalm 37:23-"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and He delights in his way."

“IMPACT THROUGH INTERCESSION.”

April 12, 2010

Dear Friends,

We praise Lord that He continues to provide members for our Prayer Force. We are so thankful to have 280 people who are praying for us daily, and we look forward to reaching our goal of at least 300 soon. We are so encouraged and strengthened when we realize every morning that so many people are praying for us. Jerry is sending out a daily prayer request on Twitter and Facebook as a reminder to pray. If you would like to become a part of our prayer team, just let us know. If you do not get the daily prayer requests and would like them, let us know that too.

Our travels in March were full of rich blessings in ministry and fellowship. We began the month in California where we really enjoyed spending time with our co-workers at Commission on Compassion and had opportunities to talk with many pastors, as well as minister in three churches. Amy celebrated a birthday while we were there and we took several day trips with our granddaughter, Cara. It was fun to visit San Juan Capistrano Mission and some beautiful flower fields in Carlsbad, CA. After California we had a great time in a mission conference at Mandeville Bible Church in Mandeville, LA. We were back at the BMW office on March 18,19 for the Prof’s Summit. Missions professors from 7 Bible Colleges met together for two days with administrators from BMW. It was an excellent time of valuable discussions as we exchanged ideas and learned how to work together to train and encourage more people to get involved in missions.

On March 22-23 we met with the Atlantic Southeast IFCA Regional at Family Bible Church in Martinez, GA. This was a great meeting with good attendance. Four of the church planters we work with in the Southeast USA were our speakers and each of them shared about their ministry and also something from the Word. They were a great encouragement. We are praying that we will find some churches or individuals to help support these church planters. One of our IFCA chaplains, Jason Peters, was also able to attend one day.

We spent the last week of March in Pennsylvania teaching a workshop and speaking at Bethany Chapel in Marion Springs, PA. On Monday, March 29, we met with a group of pastors and helped them reactivate the Western Pennsylvania IFCA Regional. We are excited to see this regional become active again.

We also spent five days in Lancaster, PA and enjoyed good fellowship with Steve and Becky Cornell at Millersville Bible Church. Jerry spoke at MBC at a Good Friday Service and we enjoyed hearing Steve preach on Easter Sunday. We have known Steve and Becky since they were students at Citadel Bible College and it is a great encouragement to see how God has blessed them in ministry over the years. They took us to see the musical, Joseph, at Sight and Sound Theater while we were there and that was a special treat. We also enjoyed a visit with several retired BMW missionary friends who live at Calvary Homes.

On our way home to Lawrenceville, we stopped in Richmond, VA and spent two days with Jerry’s sister, Pat, and her husband, John. We love spending time with our family. When we got home Jerry was unloading the car and someone asked if he needed some help. It was Susan who had come down on her Spring Break to surprise us! It was special to have all three of our girls together for a few days.

Thank you for praying for us,

Serving with Joy,

Jerry and Amy

“IMPACT THROUGH INTERCESSION.”
March 2, 2010

Dear Friends,

It is a great joy to see the Lord bringing together our Prayer Force. We are so thankful to have 232 people who are praying for us daily, and we are looking forward to reaching our goal of 300 soon. We are so encouraged and strengthened when we realize every day that so many people are praying for us. Jerry is sending out a daily prayer request on Twitter and Facebook as reminders to pray. If you would like to become a part of our prayer team, just let us know.

We were really blessed at the Pastors/Wives Retreat in Baton Rouge, LA. the first three days of February. Dr. John Talley challenged us to have a more effective prayer life by praying Biblically, using prayers from the Bible as a basis for our prayers for others. It was a wonderful time of challenge from the Word and of sharing with other couples who are in fulltime ministry. We spent a few days visiting long time friends in Reeves and Lake Charles, LA. It was relaxing and encouraging to stay at Camp Pearl and enjoy great fellowship with Don and Angie Barrett.

After our trip to Louisiana we were able to be home for ten days and get caught up on some things at home and at my office. Amy was finally able to get all the Christmas decorations down and we had opportunities to spend some time with family and friends.

On February 19 we flew to Los Angeles for almost three weeks of ministry. We are staying in the guest apartment at our Deaf/Blind ministry, and we have been visiting and fellowshipping with many friends in the area. It has been a special blessing to spend a lot of time with our granddaughter, Cara. Jerry spoke at First Fundamental Bible Church, in La Puente our first Sunday here. On the 28th we were at Los Angeles Community Bible Church. Both these churches are special to us and we always are blessed to be able to minister and fellowship with them. Many people in both churches have joined our prayer team and this gives us an even closer relationship with each church.

Thank you for praying for us,

Serving with Joy,

Jerry and Amy

Prayer

A Four-Part Prayer Plan for Every Believer

There are four elements that can measure the strength of a church, the power of the lives of individuals, and the depth of discipleship.

These areas we are examining one-by-one are:

reality in their spiritual life
integrity in their personal life
stability in their relational life
eternity during their temporal/earthly life

These truths are all summed up with the Scripture passage that teaches them, on a small card that I carry around in my wallet that corresponds to and summarizes the Word Filled family book.

All in

The event in the Old Testament we are all very familiar where the Children of Israel are just about to cross the Jordan after wandering in the Wilderness for 40 years due to their disobedience before the Lord. The people had been here once before 40 years before but because of a scary report given by ten of the twelve people sent to spy out the new country, the promised land, the people became terrified and did not want to go any futher. You can see that account in Numbers 13 and 14. Now here they are again under new leadership with the death of Moses and Joshua the son of Nun is about to take them into the land.We pick up the account in Joshua 1:2 where Joshua is being spoken to by the Lord and he says"Moses my servant is dead; now therfore arise, go over this Jordan thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel... Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them. ONLY BE THOU STRONG AND VERY COURAGEOUS, (my emphasis) that thou mays observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therin day and night, that thou mayes observe to do according to all that is written therein: FOR THEN THOU SHALT MAKE THY WAY PROSPEROUS, AND THEN THOU SHALT HAVE GOOD SUCCESS.(my emphasis) Joshua 1:2,3,6-8Here Joshua is where he has been 40 years before and once again God is giving them the land but notice. He is telling him to be strong and courageous.... Why? He has given him and the Children of Israel the land?! We know the answer. The same walled cities, the same large people, the same giants in the land that were there 40 years before are still there and Joshua and the Children of Israel will still have to fight them to get the Land and claim it. Along with his commanding him to be strong and courageous though God also is giving him a checklist to make sure he and the people are walking in the right direction. By keeping the book of the law always before him by meditating on it day and night and doing everything it says... THEN they shall be prosperous. THEN they shall be successful. When people are playing cards and gambling with money there is a phrase I have heard when they are about to make their big move. "I'm all in." They say this to signify they have nothing left and they are betting that they have the best hand in the crowd. I submit to you that the Children of Israel were about to be in that position. They had been given an opportunity to cash in their chips 40 years before but because of their fear they had not. Now 40 years later they had come to the end of all of that, they had come to the end of all the games, they had come to the end of themselves and they were telling God, "I'm all in." That is where we need to be every day with our Lord. We need to show we have nothing left we have to cash our humanity in every day, every moment and push our sins across the table and say to our Heavenly Father, "I'm All In!!" By doing so we will be different from those gambling on the luck of the draw, we will be different by hoping we have the winning hand. We can confidently say “We are all in.” Our confidence is on God and He has won and we are totally in His hand.
